Golf strength and conditioning provides the physical foundation that allows golfers to move efficiently, generate speed, and repeat their golf swing with greater consistency. Having sufficient strength, mobility, and physical capacity does not automatically mean a golfer can use those qualities effectively during the golf swing. The golf swing is a highly coordinated sequence involving the pelvis, torso, arms, hands, and club. Each part of the movement influences what happens next, meaning that poor coordination can create inefficiencies even when the golfer possesses adequate physical ability. Developing motor control in golf allows the player to organize movement more effectively and gives them a stronger foundation for improving their overall golf performance.

Flexibility generally describes the amount of motion available within a joint or surrounding tissue, while mobility refers to the ability to actively control and use that available range of motion. However, greater flexibility does not automatically create a better golf swing. A golfer needs enough strength and stability to control the range of motion they possess. Effective golf fitness should help golfers access the movement required by their swing while maintaining control throughout that movement. Rate of force development, or RFD, describes how quickly a golfer can produce force. Strength determines how much force can potentially be produced, while RFD describes how rapidly that force can be expressed. A golfer may possess considerable strength, but the ability to express that strength quickly is what makes it useful during an explosive golf swing. There is not enough time during the downswing to slowly build toward maximum force. The golfer must be capable of producing and transferring force rapidly.


This is why golf power represents more than simply being strong. Power involves producing force at speed. The combination of strength and rate of force development gives the golfer a physical foundation for creating greater clubhead speed and producing explosive movement during the swing.


Strength and RFD are closely connected within golf strength and conditioning. Developing a larger force-producing capacity provides the foundation, while training the ability to express that force quickly helps the golfer access it within the limited timeframe of the golf swing.


The ability to rapidly create and transfer force also influences how efficiently the golfer can interact with the ground.
